Fundación Tierras Patagónicas

This season, we are very proud to be helping to protect the unique place we live and work in by partnering with a local conservation and social mobility charity: the Fundación Tierras Patagónicas.

As all of our guests will know, we are incredibly lucky at Tipiliuke Lodge to call the estancia home. It is a truly stunning landscape, and is home to a wide variety of wildlife, flora and fauna, and a very healthy fish population. Nearby, we are also lucky to have access to stunning lakes, untouched Andean forest and pristine rivers in the wider province of Neuquén in which we are based.

We know we cannot take this for granted, which is why we are delighted to be supporting the Foundation. Founded in the 1980s by residents of San Martín de los Andes, it has been relaunched by locals after a period of dormancy to contribute to the protection of the environment in Argentine Patagonia.

To start off with, the Foundation is working to prevent forest fires, provide support to local authorities when they break out, and to help restore native forests in the aftermath of fires. Fires are a huge risk in the area, both to those who live and work here and the local ecosystem. In recent years, as a result of climate change, the number of forest fires has increased significantly.

While combating this threat, the Foundation also provides a unique opportunity for professional training, employment and personal development for young people from rural areas and indigenous Mapuche communities from the south of the province of Neuquén, who are trained and employed as firefighters by the Foundation.

In the coming years, the Foundation plans to develop more projects designed to conserve the local environment through communication and education.

You may find some more information on the Foundation in the lodge, and can find out more for yourself at the Foundation’s website or instagram. Holly, one of our neighbours on the estancia and a former member of the Tipiliuke team, is also involved in the Foundation and would be more than happy to pop in for a chat if you would like to hear more.

As a newly relaunched charity, the Foundation would be incredibly grateful for any contributions our guests are able to make in order to preserve this unique part of the world we are all so lucky to be able to enjoy, hopefully for many more years to come. For our US guests, donations are also tax deductible.

We look forward to supporting the Foundation in the years to come as it grows and expands its projects to help protect the place we all love so much.
